La première exposition universelle a été organisée à Londres en 1851. Depuis lors, près d'une centaine d'événements similaires ont été produits à travers le monde, dont douze en Belgique (Anvers 1885, 1894, 1930 ; Bruxelles 1888, 1897, 1910, 1935, 1958 ; Gent-1913 ; Liège-1905, 1930, 1939).
Le Bureau International des Expositions définit les expositions internationales comme "une exposition, dont l'objectif principal est l'éducation des gens. Elle peut présenter les moyens, dont dispose l'humanité, afin de satisfaire les besoins des civilisations, montrer le progrès accompli dans l'un ou dans de nombreux domaines d'activités humaines ou montrer les perspectives pour l'avenir".
Chaque exposition universelle se distingue par un thème. Force est de constater que les matières écologiques semblent - depuis quelques années et pour 4 ans encore - au centre des débats.
Ainsi, Aichi (Japon/2005) s'intitulait la "sagesse de la nature". En juin prochain, l'Expo de Saragosse (Espagne) sera consacrée à l'eau et le développement durable ; et celle de Yeosu (Corée du Sud/2012) à l'exploitation des ressources océanes ainsi qu'à la gestion de la vie et de l'activité économique le long des côtes.
Seule exception à cette vague "verte", Shanghai (Chine/2010), qui explorera les questions liées à la vie urbaine.
Si vous en avez l'occasion, ne manquez surtout pas de vous rendre à Saragosse entre les 14 juin et 14 septembre 2008. 104 pays y seront présents pour se pencher sur l'une de nos ressources essentielles : l'eau. La prochaine expo organisée en Europe sera celle de 2015 où Milan (Italie) et Izmir (Turquie) sont actuellement candidates.
Sachez enfin que Aichi, Zaragoza et Shanghai organiseront une exposition itinérante pour promouvoir l'héritage des expos dans le monde entier.

De eerste universele tentoonstelling vond in 1851 in Londen plaats. Sindsdien werden zo’n honderdtal gelijkwaardige tentoonstellingen over de hele wereld, waarvan twaalf in België, georganiseerd. (Antwerpen 1885, 1894, 1930 ; Brussel 1888, 1897, 1910, 1935, 1958; Gent-1913 ; Luik-1905, 1930, 1939).
Het Internationale Bureau van de Tentoonstellingen definieert deze tentoonstellingen als "een tentoonstelling, waarvan het belangrijkste doel is de mensen op te voeden. Zij kan de middelen voorstellen, waarover de mens beschikt, om aan de behoeften van de beschaving te voldoen, om de vooruitgang in één of verschillende gebieden van menselijke activiteit of de vooruitzichten voor de toekomst te tonen”.
Elke universele tentoonstelling heeft haar eigen thema. Zo kan men vaststellen dat het milieu reeds -sinds enkele jaren en ook nog de komende 4 jaar- in het middelpunt van de belangstelling stond en zal staan. Zo kreeg de tentoonstelling in 2005 in het Japanse Aichi de naam “Wijsheid der natuur” en in juni zal de tentoonstelling in het Spaanse Saragossa aan het water en de duurzame ontwikkeling gewijd zijn; en die in 2012 in het Zuid-Koreaanse Yeosu aan de ontginning van de rijkdommen der oceanen en aan het leven en de economische activiteiten langs de kusten. De enige uitzondering op deze "groene" golf is de tentoonstelling in Shanghai, China, in 2010, die zal gewijd zijn aan het leven in de stad.
Als u de gelegenheid heeft, is het zeker de moeite waard om tussen 14 juni en 14 september 2008 naar Saragossa te gaan.104 landen zullen er aanwezig zijn om zich over één van onze belangrijkste natuurlijke rijkdommen: het water te buigen. Voor de volgende tentoonstelling die in Europa in 2015 zal gehouden worden zijn Milaan (Italië) en Izmir (Turkije) kandidaat.

The first World Fair was organized in London in 1851. Ever since, nearly a hundred similar events have taken place throughout the world, including twelve in Belgium (Antwerp 1885, 1894, 1930; Brussels 1888, 1897, 1910, 1935, 1958; Race-1913; Liege-1905, 1930, 1939).
The International Office of the Exhibitions claims that the principal purpose of an exhibition the education of the public is: it can exhibit the means at man's disposal for meeting the needs of civilization, or show the progress achieved in one or more fields of human activity, or show prospects for the future.
Each World Fair is characterized by a topic. It is important to note that the ecological matters have been, since a few years and will be for the 4 coming years, in the center of the debates. This way, the exhibition in Aichi (Japan in 2005) was entitled the "wisdom of nature". Next June, the exhibition of Saragossa (Spain) will be devoted to water and durable development; and the one of Yeosu (South Korea/2012) to the exploitation of the oceanic resources as well as to the management of life and economic activity along the coasts. Only exception to this "green" wave is Shanghai (China/2010), which will explore the questions related to urban life.
If you can, try to go to Saragossa between June 14 and September 14, 2008. 104 countries will be there to focus on one of our most important resource: which is water. The next exhibition organized in Europe will be the one of 2015. Milan (Italy) and Izmir (Turkey) are present candidates.
